Photosynthesis May Rely On Quantum Effect View Articles
forgethistory sends us to PhysOrg for a summary of new research suggesting that the near instantaneous energy transfer achieved by photosynthesis may rely on quantum effects. From the article: "Through photosynthesis, green plants and cyanobacteria are able to transfer sunlight energy to molecular reaction centers for conversion into chemical energy with nearly 100-percent efficiency. Speed is the key — the transfer of the solar energy takes place almost instantaneously so little energy is wasted as heat. How photosynthesis achieves this near instantaneous energy transfer is a long-standing mystery that may have finally been solved."
Annual U.S. Wind Power Rankings Track Industry`s Rapid Growth View Articles
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) recently released its annual rankings of wind energy development in the U.S. citing more than 2,400 megawatts (MW) of new power generation was installed, representing an investment of about $4 billion.
Solar America Initiative Offers Funding Opportunity for Solar Energy View Articles
To support the development of long-term advances, the U.S. Department of Energy`s (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Program (SETP) is providing funding for the development of innovative, revolutionary, and highly disruptive future-generation solar electric technologies, particularly novel devices or processes with potentially significant performance or cost advantages.

East River Becomes a Green Zone View Articles
"During high tide periods in July and August, when there is such a demand for power, this could be pretty good stuff, financially speaking." The murky rivers around New York City bring to mind many things _ garbage, chemicals, perhaps mobsters` bodies. Clean energy is not one of them. But the state is trying to change that thinking. It is teaming up with a Virginia company to use the East River for a unique experiment in renewable energy: Six giant turbines are being placed underwater in a $7 million project to harness the energy of the tides and produce electricity. One of the 16-foot-diameter, windmill-like turbines is already operating, supplying power to a grocery store and a garage on Roosevelt Island. The other turbines are being installed over the next two weeks. Read more
