SCHOTT Solar to Increase Domestic PV Production View Articles
"The recent opening of the 64 MW Nevada Solar One solar thermal power plant demonstrates that large-scale solar thermal power is a renewable energy technology whose time has come." SCHOTT Solar made announced plans to build a new photovoltaic manufacturing facility that will increase its domestic PV production by more than 60 MW. via Clean Edge
Recycling Wind Turbines View Articles
"Because the wind-turbine industry is relatively young, there is only a limited amount of practical experience on the removal and recycling of wind turbines" Science Daily - The development of wind power promises much in terms of providing us with renewable energy for the future and wind turbines could be the most effective way to harness that power. via Science Daily
New Zero Energy Prefab Home Debuts at San Francisco City Hall View Articles
Michelle Kaufmann`s latest zero energy, green prefab home has just made its debut on the lawn of San Francisco City Hall - and Inhabitat has some great photos of the home, including the green roof, solar panels, and interior spaces.
Rapeseed biofuel `produces more greenhouse gas than oil or petrol` View Articles
"The significance of it is that the supposed benefits of biofuels are even more disputable than had been thought hitherto." A renewable energy source designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is contributing more to global warming than fossil fuels, a study suggests. via Peak Oil
Future Looks Bright for Large Scale Solar Farms View Articles
Hugh Pickens writes "The economist reports that Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems that capture and focus the sun`s rays to heat a working fluid and drive a turbine, are making a comeback. Although the world`s largest solar farm was built over twenty years ago, until recently no new plants have been built. Now with the combination of federal energy credits, the enactment of renewable energy standards in many states, and public antipathy to coal fired power plant, the first such plant to be built in decades started providing 64 megawatts of electricity to Las Vegas this summer. Electricity from the Nevada plant costs an estimated 17 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), but projections suggest that CSP power could fall to below ten cents per kWh as the technology improves. Coal power costs just 2-3 cents per kWh but that will likely rise if regulation eventually factors in the environmental costs of the carbon coal produces."Read more of this story at Slashdot.
92 Square Miles of Solar Panels Could Power the USA View Articles
The stigma of solar only as one of many solutions needed to satisfy our energy needs may not be true. David Mills, chairman and chief scientific officer of solar company Ausra, presented a paper at the International Solar Energy Society conference saying that solar thermal plants could indeed solve all of our energy problems.
Southern New Hampshire U. Commits to 15-Year Green Power Purchase View Articles
Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) has committed to purchase renewable energy equivalent to 100% of its electricity needs for the next 15 years. Under an agreement with PPM Energy Inc., SNHU will purchase more than 12 million kWh of renewable energy certificates (RECs) annually from PPM`s national portfolio of renewable energy projects, which could include wind, solar, geothermal or other renewable sources. News Release - SNHU becomes EPA Green Power ...
SUB to Launch Green Pricing Program View Articles
Springfield Utility Board (SUB), a municipal utility serving about 30,000 customers in Oregon, plans to offer a green power program starting in October. Under the new program, consumers will have the option of purchasing renewable energy in 100 kWh increments for $1 each month, or a cost of 1¢:/kWh above standard electricity rates. To supply the program, SUB will purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from certified suppliers. Customers can buy an unlimited number of 100-kWh blocks. The average residential SUB customer uses about 1,300 kWh each month. SUB is offering the program to comply ...
