Five men were convicted by a suburban London court of assisting in the failed terrorist attack on London?s transportation system on July 21, 2005, which sought to repeat the attacks that on July 7 that killed 52 people. The five ? all Muslim immigrants from Africa between 25 and 30 ? were sentenced to prison terms from 7 to 17 years for providing safe houses, passports, clothing and food after bombs planted in three subway stations and on a bus failed to explode. The two given the longest sentences, 12 and 17 years, were found guilty of knowing about the plot in advance. The court found that one lived above the ?bomb factory? and helped dump incriminating evidence, including empty bottles of hydrogen peroxide, used in making the bombs, in bins outside his apartment complex. The judge, Paul Worsley, said laws setting the maximum sentences he imposed were ?woefully inadequate for the enormity? of the plot. Four bomb-carriers in the failed attack were sentenced to life last year.
