JCPenney Installs Large PV Systems in NJ View Articles
J. C. Penney Company, Inc. and SunPower Corp., a manufacturer of high-efficiency solar panels, announced the completed installation of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems on five JCPenney stores in New Jersey; the five installations total about 2 megawatts (MW). The initiative is part of a commitment to host 3.7 MW, between the announced New Jersey installations and an additional four installations at California JCPenney locations, completed in 2008. The nine PV systems vary in size from 259 to 602 kilowatts (kW) and are anticipated to generate the equivalent of an average of 25% of each store’s energy demand. Each system is owned and operated by Integrys Energy Services, Inc. Under power purchase agreements, JCPenney purchases the systems’ electricity from Integrys on an ongoing basis, and Integrys retains ownership of the renewable energy credits associated with the systems. In addition to hosting the solar power systems, JCPenney has also been recently recognized for its work in energy management, receiving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award in March 2009.
