Fuel-Cell Power Boost View Articles
A new fuel cell is 50 times as powerful as any other product that generates electricity from liquid methanol, thanks to improved catalyst and membrane technologies. The system can keep electric forklifts and other factory vehicles running for 16 hours. Compared with using electricity from coal-fired power plants to charge a battery pack, it reduces carbon emissions 66 percent.
From the Labs: Materials View Articles
New publications, experiments and breakthroughs in materials--and what they mean. Saving Silicon in Solar CellsA microwire composite could help reduce the cost of solar power
TR10: Light-Trapping Photovoltaics View Articles
Nanoparticles boost solar power`s prospects. In 1995, finishing her undergraduate degree in physics, Kylie Catchpole decided to take a risk on a field that was nearly moribund: photovoltaics. "There was a sense that I might have difficulty ever being employed," she recalls. But her gamble paid off. In 2006 Catchpole, then a postdoc, discovered something that opened the door to making thin-film solar cells significantly more efficient at converting light into electricity. It`s an advance that could help make solar power more competitive with fossil fuels.
Call to a Buy Americana stirs clean-energy row View Articles
Wind turbines stand near a power station in Yumen, China, part of that nation`s investments in low-carbon energy technologies that now far exceed those of the United States.
Appanoose school to add turbine View Articles
Appanoose Elementary School has broken ground on a new wind turbine as part a program to broaden awareness of alternative energy production in Kansas.

Two Questions View Articles
Many people sighed in relief when the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act became law more than a year ago. I argued in the November/December issue of this magazine that the so-called “stimulus bill” may go down in history as having saved much of the renewable energy industry during the financial crisis of 2008-2009.

Pathway To a 100% Renewable EU by 2050 Unveiled View Articles
The European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) this week released its new report RE-thinking 2050 a pathway how the European Union can switch to a 100% renewable energy supply for electricity, heating and cooling as well as transport, examining the effects on Europe`s energy supply system and on CO2 emissions. RE-thinking 2050, was initially launched last week.
Iberdrola Acquires 1.5 GW of Wind Rights in Romania View Articles
Iberdrola Renovables has been granted a license by Romanian grid operator Transelectrica to connect a total of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of wind power to its national electricity grid.
Renewable Energy Past and Present in California`s Tehachapi View Articles
The Tehachapi Mountains in central California`s Kern County are a wind energy museum. Four generations of turbines are distinguishable on their slopes and ridges, with an installed capacity of more than 800 megawatts of wind power. These hills are alive with the sound of wind power. Kern was once known as oil country and its rich fields supplied much of the oil that made California the oil capital of the U.S back in the 1920s and fueled the U.S. industry`s mid-20th century boom. As Ed Duggan of wind developer Oak Creek Energy said, "Kern County knows energy."
Geothermal Drilling Underway for Orita I & San Jacinto Projects View Articles
Ram Power Corp. announced that it has started the six-well drilling program permitted for the Orita I geothermal development project which is underway in Imperial County, California. This drilling program will define and test the resource zones that will supply steam to the planned 49.9-megawatt (MW) Orita I power plant.
